Aviation: Benefits Beyond Borders - new report

In December 2024, ATAG published the latest edition of the Aviation: Benefits Beyond Borders report. This builds on new analysis from Oxford Economics to provide the most up-to-date assessment of aviation’s economic and social benefits throughout the world. There are more than 2,500 data points in the report and information is provided at a global level; for 14 major regions and groups; and individually for 85 countries.

Aviation: Benefits Beyond Borders is recognised as a key and reliable reference source by governments, the media and the industry. The 2024 edition confirms that air transport supports:

  • 86.5 million jobs
  • $4.1 trillion of global economic impact
  • 3.9% of global GDP
  • 33% of world trade by value.

The 2024 edition also includes a section celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation, with data comparing civil aviation 80 years ago and today. For example:

  • Passenger numbers have increased by 90,155% in the last 80 years, compared to a population increase of c.300%.
  • RTKs have increased by 85,025%.
  • The flying time today from London to Sydney is 22 hours, compared to 4 days in 1945.

The publication was launched at the 80th anniversary event in Chicago, which was hosted by ICAO in December 2024 (see separate section).
