Update to Waypoint 2050 in 2025

ATAG’s Waypoint 2050 analysis was published in 2021 and identifies various pathways for the decarbonisation of air transport. In 2025, ATAG will conduct an analysis on progress towards net zero. The purpose is to ensure that we are using the most up-to-date traffic forecasts; to account for any changes in technology; assess policy options needed to reach net zero; and review SAF deployment over the last four years. It will also provide a basis for future communications activities.

The work will complement rather than duplicate other industry initiatives on net zero and explore any areas where additional analysis is needed.

Working groups have been established in 2025, comprised of subject matter experts who will contribute towards the analysis.

ATAG is planning to hold a workshop in Washington, D.C. on 6 May 2025, at which the initial analysis will be shared, in order to test the various assumptions and assess what could be included in a public-facing version of the report. A likely publication date for the updated report is July 2025.

ATAG members are invited to share any useful resources for the Waypoint 2050 update with Haldane Dodd. This includes analysis from reputable sources of global technology developments; information on green hydrogen and low-carbon electricity availability; and information on carbon credits and removals.
